Ethics and Legal impact on my Independent Proposal

Because I aim to be apart of both Web and Publishing. I believe that these regulatory bodies have an impact on your industry, they are Advertising Standards Authority, Ofcom, Press Complaints Commission and Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.

Ethical:

  • representation of gender
  • representation of religious beliefs
  • linguistic usages ?
  • accessibility ( I believe with a blog it's about being about to change the font size and having pictures with text on for the blind.)
  • professional body codes of practice eg BBC producers’ guidelines,?
  • Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) accessibility standards http://www.w3.org/
Legal:
  • Official Secrets Act 1989;
  • Obscene Publications Act 1959 (and later amendments);
  • Films Act 1985, (if I post a vlog on the blog);
  • Video Recordings Act 1984,  (if I post a vlog on the blog);
  • Race Relations Act 1976 (and later amendments);
  • Human Rights Act 1998;
  • Licensing Act 2003 (and later amendments);
  • privacy law;
  • copyright and intellectual property law;
  • libel law
As a part of having both a mix of journalism and photography on my blog, I will have to be careful of both ethical and legal issues as both photog and hack. As well as this I also need to understand the regulations that a journalist is subject to upholding.

Ethically for photography I shouldn't borrow images without permission of the original owner and I should after using their image or photograph as part of a project or photography series I should credit them and re-link them.
There is also the ethical issue of over editing an image of a model so that their  body is warped into an ideal of the male or female form that isn't achievable because of the amount of post production to change the image from the original. This has an effect on children and young people as the believe that this is what people can and should look like.  Photojournalism and cropping

Ethically for Journalism, is a grey area there are certain things that can in the interest in the public be persuaded unethically, however this can be misused when journalists go through peoples voicemail's and emails to find a story.

I should not be using peoples quotes as if it was my own writing or writing as if I was there when using secondary sources. I must avoid facilitating discrimination of any kind as this can lead to demonisation of a particular group. If I am covering and event or story that is breaking on a social media site I need to make sure that I am accurate over keeping up with the speed of potential false rumours.

I also need to make sure that I am transparent with information from other sources, attributing them as well as a link back in the text, so that the reader can go to the other source to gain a background on what your talking about.

I should also not just rehash or 'churnalism' of someone else work or of a press release and  not conduct any background checking, finding a new or different angle or adding any value to the piece.

I need to be able to admit when there are errors in my work whether it be a small spelling mistake or something more. Then to be able to publicly acknowledge my mistake, either on the blog piece where it occurred or separately (i.e. in a newspaper/magazine either the next day or the next issue).

Ethically I should never feed the trolls.

On the legal side of photography I should never take photographs of children under sixteen without their parents consent.  Pap - images over a persons life  and invasion of piracy

For Journalism - Libel.  Hacking. Not crediting a quote. Writing as if you were there when using secondary sources.

Media Industries

Publishing is a varied group of different media industries all together this group includes; Books, Comic Books/Graphic Novels, Manga, Directories and Mailing Lists, Journals, Newspapers, Magazines and Business Media, News Agencies etc.  Publishing now includes being both print based as well as online. Publishing Media has been slowly moving from being an purely print based to being solely online.

Magazines coming under the heading of Publishing Media Industries, magazines are a very different medium than newspapers or blogs, magazines are very much still a print based medium however they still run online content.

Newspapers were once the largest media industry at news gathering (and in tabloid cases - gossip and sport), both Newspapers and Magazines are similar in terms of how they are printed, run etc but target very different groups of people. Newspapers generally are out there to bring in the daily news or to give insight in to a political or intellectual figure, via interview or press release.

Animation is a growing media industry; this is potentially because of advancements in technology making the process easier than when it was either hand drawn or clay animation. However there are still many companies still using traditional techniques and then after that process moving on to digitise the animation. A buck against this trend would be Studio Ghibli, who started to use computer tech with Princess Mononoke. Miyazaki, co-founder of Ghibli said in an interview with the Financial Times that "it's very important for me to retain the right ratio between working by hand and computer. I have learnt that balance now, how to use both and still be able to call my films 2D." The balance between computer and hand drawn has been used as a standard for all the films produced until Ponyo where Miyazaki went back to the tradition of hand drawn animation for everything saying that "hand drawing on paper is the fundamental of animation." Studio Ghibli's computer animation dept was dissolved before the production of Ponyo had been started.

Film has continually grown from a small niche industry to a large corprate giant of the media indusrties. Film is mainly used to entertain audiences, by stories and real life stories, portyared by actors who because of being in films and on television gain a celebrity status.

Television has a similar style of indursty to film, however this is generally on a smaller budget (some execptions to only having a small budget is Downton Abbey which generally has a larger budet than most other costume dramas.).

Web 2.0 is as continually growning part of the industry, which incorpates now all previous media indusrties.

Music industry is a manie of big companies, small local companies and then individuals that make money by creating, promoting and selling music and merchandise.

Radio industry main purpose is to promote and spread music. However the industries also create audio dramas, interviews, political slots and funnies.

Video Games industries has been growing slowly and is now a very large media industry now. Their main role is to produce, promote and create interactive entertainment.

Facilities is the part of the media indusrty which loans ror sells equipment to other industries like Film, Tv etc.
